Group Classes

Training your dog should be fun! Group classes are not only economical but also social for you and your canine. Class sizes are smaller (7 dog max) so you get more personal coaching than at big box training facilities which may have 15 or more dogs in class. Also, with smaller classes your dog can learn in a less stressful and distracting environment. Establishing leadership with your dog is essential to a healthy relationship. Learn how to communicate clearly in a language your dog understands. Also learn the latest practical and effective training techniques using positive reinforcement and fair consequences. Classes are held at Horizon Pet Supply conveniently located on the Maple Valley Highway (Highway 169). The address is 30741 3rd AVE, Ste 115, Black Diamond 98010.

Testimonials about group classes:

"Your puppy class was fun and social and positive; not overwhelming."
            - Anne (Boxer)

"Samson was sooooo shy when he started puppy class. You were very insightful and really helped him learn to socialize with the other puppies. He came out of his shell by the end! He is definitely a new and improved puppy. We appreciate your guidance."      - Steph and Jim (Retriever)

"Gina was a great instructor; our dog adored her!"  -Dave (Beagle)

"I took Chesney to the bus stop today--I figured it would be really hard for him to not get really excited since it's been all summer since we've been there (he was just a tiny pup last year). He did so great--I reminded him to keep off and he laid down while the kids came up to him! I was so happy!”    - From Jeni about her Goldendoodle puppy after four weeks of Basic Obedience Class

Puppy Play School
No Puppy Left Behind!

This fun, drop-in socializing class is designed for very young puppies, ages 9 weeks to 4½ months of age (toy breeds up to 5½ months). The puppies will be supervised by a certified pet dog trainer or dog daycare owner. This is a critical social period for your puppy; however it is too risky to expose your puppy to the unpredictable environment of dog parks. In this class, your puppy will get to practice proper social behavior with other healthy, vaccinated puppies in a safe, structured environment. Research has found that puppies allowed to socialize with a variety of breeds in this developmental stage are much less likely to become dog aggressive later on.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior believes that it should be the standard of care for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated.  Click here to read their statement.

Get your puppy ready for Basic Obedience Class at Horizon Pet starting in September.

We will have two groups: small or shy pups and large or bold pups.

Drop in 45 minutes session includes 30 minutes puppies play, 10 minutes information and tips (house/crate training, nutrition, appropriate chew toys, etc), 5 minutes Ask the Trainer.   Preregistration is NOT required.

Pre-requisite: all puppies must be 9 weeks to 4½ months (toy breeds up to 5½ months) and have their first DHLPP vaccination, clear fecal test and wellness exam. Please bring veterinarian record of first shots.

Basic Obedience
Gaining Attention and Control

Designed for any non-aggressive dog ages 4 months through adult.

Basic obedience includes: sit, down, come, off, loose leash walking, wait, stay, leave it, calm greetings, tricks, appropriate training collars and fit, problem solving, management and prevention, leadership, nutrition, and maintaining focus around distractions. Instruction includes how to “think dog” and use positive reinforcement techniques to motivate good behavior and control.

Pre-requisite: Dog must be current on vaccinations (including DHLPP, Bordatella, and Rabies). A clear fecal test and wellness visit by a veterinarian within the last year is recommended. Preregistration is required.

Note: Please bring your dog the first night.

Intermediate Obedience with Beginning Agility for Fun

We will  tune up you and your dog’s basic obedience skills and add distance, duration and distractions to Sit, Stay, Come, etc and add Leave it, Go to Your Rug, Give (Out) and more.  We will discuss how to fade lures and make treats random for established behaviors.  We will teach new tricks and introduce fun agility equipment and targeting.  Agility is excellent exercise for mind and body and helps dog’s gain confidence and learn to work as a team with their handler.  You will need lots of tiny, high value treats for agility, new tricks, and fine tuning skills.  Bring a variety.   Do not feed your dog a full meal before class.    Bring a treat bag, nail pouch or pockets in clothing, light weight leash.

Pre-requisite: Dog must be current on vaccinations (including DHLPP, Bordatella, and Rabies). A clear fecal test and wellness visit by a veterinarian within the last year is recommended. Dog must have completed Basic Obedience, Boot Camp, private lessons, or have instructor permission. Preregistration is required.

What to bring to class:

1. Bring a treat pouch or nail apron (pockets or fanny pack will work) and lots of tiny, soft treats of high value, cut up the size of a small pea for large dogs or tic-tac size for small dogs. Thick zip bag or container. Keep open bags out of reach of other pups during class (they are sneaky!)

2. Registration form if not already turned in or missing info for the form when you registered.

3. Water and dish for dog if desired, though group water dish will be provided.

4. Clean rug, pad or towel (size of your dog) for him to lay on during class. I recommend a rectangular flat pad the size of your dog lying down. A bathroom rug (rubberized on bottom can be used in a pinch).

5. 5 ½ - 6 foot leash (cotton web or leather preferred for comfort and grip) - NO retractable “Flexi” leads for training

6. Please bring your dog wearing a flat buckle/plastic snap collar. If you have used a training collar, bring that as well. We will discuss collars during class and individually work out the best collar for your dog at this stage of his training. You do not need to purchase a training collar prior to class. Young puppies should only wear flat buckle collars.

7. Bring paper and pen to take notes, if desired.

Note: Dog must have one family member present that is at least 18 years old.
